Espadrilles have been made since at least the 14 century, from Spain.  They normally have a jute sole, canvas upper and come in every color and style imaginable.  
In the 1960's Yves St-Laurent brought the espadrille into the fashion world.  He asked for an espadrille to be made with a heel which had never been done, and they've been a popular summer shoe to wear ever since.
